Remove Carpet Odors with Baking Soda

Whether you have lingering carpet odors that just won't go away or a recent spill or accident has left your carpet stinky, baking soda may be able to take care of the problem for you. There are various products that promise to get rid of carpet odors, such as carpet deodorizers, but baking soda provides a more natural and safe way to deal with odors in your home. Lehigh Cleanpro can help you get rid of carpet odors with these simple steps.

What You Will Need

  • Baking soda
  • Broom
  • Dust Pan
  • Vacuum

Steps to Remove Carpet Odors

  1. Take some time to identify what areas in your carpet are causing the odors. If a recent spill or accident is causing the smell it will be easier to pinpoint the problem area.
  2. Sprinkle baking soda onto the stinky area liberally. If you're not sure exactly where the odors are coming from, sprinkle baking soda onto the general area.
  3. Use a broom to work the baking soda beyond the surface of your carpet. This is especially important if the odors have been around for a while because they are most likely not just on the surface.
  4. Once you have worked the baking soda into your carpet, sprinkle another layers of baking soda on the surface. Don't be afraid to use too much baking soda since it won't damage your carpet.
  5. Let the baking soda sit in its place overnight or longer depending on how strong the odors are. Avoid walking over the area while it has the baking soda on it.
  6. Once you're ready to remove the baking soda, start by sweeping up the excess baking soda on the surface onto a dust pan. If you are working with a rug, simply shake off the excess outdoors.
  7. Once you've removed the excess baking soda, use a vacuum to remove the baking soda that was worked into the carpet.
  8. If you notice the smell got better but isn't completely gone, repeat the process. You can try leaving the baking soda on for longer and even repeat the process monthly to prevent other odors.
