Want to give your furniture that "like-new" shine without putting harmful chemicals into the air and your living space? Try out some of these furniture polish recipes you can make with ingredients from your own cupboard.

Varnished Wood

If you have varnished wood furniture, mix a few drops of lemon juice into 1/2 cup of warm water. Place in a spray bottle and lightly dampen a soft cotton cloth with the solution. Wipe the furniture and then finish with a dry soft cotton cloth.

Unvarnished Wood

Mix two tablespoons each of olive oil and lemon juice and dab a soft cotton cloth into the mixture. Wring the cloth so that it further absorbs and spreads the solutions into the fabric. Using wide strokes, wipe your furniture with the cloth.

Aluminum

Clean aluminum pieces with cream of tartar, water, and a soft cloth.

Brass/Bronze

Use either lemon and baking soda or vinegar and salt. Add a bit of ketchup for the really tarnished areas.

Chrome

On a sheet of aluminum foil, shiny side out, place baby oil and vinegar to polish your chrome.

Copper

Boil a rag in water and vinegar with one tablespoon of salt. While the rag is still hot, polish the copper. For areas that are particularly tarnished, use ketchup, baking soda, or lemon juice. A lemon wedge with salt works nicely on copper cookware.

Gold

To clean gold, use toothpaste or make a paste of salt, vinegar, and flour.

Stainless Steel

Wipe stainless steel with a cloth lightly damped with white vinegar or olive oil. On sinks, use club soda, and on cookware add 4 tablespoons of baking soda for each quart of water. While these methods work fine for everyday cleaning, at times you will need professional cleaning of your furniture and carpets.
