You may have hardwood, painted or tiled stairs, and would like to add a carpet runner for safety, comfort and style. A staircase with a runner creates a beautiful feature focal point in your home. We are carpet cleaning experts here at Lehigh Cleanpro in Danielsville, Pennsylvania, and we have had our share of dealing with runners. We would like to offer you a few tips on what you should look for in a carpet runner for your stairs.

Runner Width

How wide should your runner be? This will depend on the width of your stairs. You will want wide enough coverage so that you don't feel like you are tightrope walking on a narrow strip, and yet not too wide to overpower the stairs. It should leave a nice amount of floor showing on either side.

Pick a Pattern

Patterned runners are beautiful, and come in a large variety of colors and designs. But be sure that the pattern will work on stairs. Oriental rug designs, such as abstracts or floral, are a good choice for stairs and will create an attractive finished look. For the pattern scale, it is best to go small on a stair runner. Large patterns will be lost and will look too disjointed as the carpet bends over each stair.

Treads Only

One option for stair carpeting is to cover only the tread with a runner, and leave the riser of the stair uncovered. This, of course, works when your stairs don't have risers at all. This creates a different overall effect, and can be a good choice in more minimalist or modern decors.

Decorative Rods

Rods are an optional accessory to stair runners. A metal rod is installed at the back of the stair, where the riser meets the tread. The rod looks like it is holding the runner in place, but it is mostly for accent rather than utilitarian effect. Rods usually have ornamental finials on the ends to accentuate the overall look.
