Here at Cleanpro Lehigh in Danielsville, PA, we know all the different types of carpet, how they are made, and exactly how they should be cleaned. Our knowledge of carpet is extensive, and we would like to take this opportunity to share some of this knowledge with you. What exactly is a carpet and how is it made? Here are some of the answers….

Description

Carpeting is a textile floor covering made up of a layer of pile attached to a fiber backing. Typically, the pile is made of twisted cut or looped strands of wool, nylon, polyester, or polypropylene that are then heat-treated to maintain their structure.

History

We've been using carpets in our homes since Middle Eastern nomadic tribes laid it down in their huts over 2,000 years ago to insulate their tents from the cold. Today, more than a billion square feet of carpeting is produced in the United States each year.

Production

Carpets today are made with a method that weaves fiber yarn into a  stiff backing, (all mechanically done, of course.) A needle pushes the carpet fibers through the underside of the backing. A hook holds the fibers in place as the needle goes back down into the backing, forming a loop. This looped carpet is called “tufted carpet.” If a “cut pile carpet” is wanted, then the tufted carpet goes through one more step in the process. The hooks holding the fibers in place is pulled over sharp blades, cutting the loops into individual strands which are what makes up a cut pile carpet. Once the carpet is finished, it is washed, dried and vacuumed. Stray strands are trimmed and then it's rolled and ready for sale.
